XOXO Gossip Girl Season 5

Spotted: Our favorite Upper East Siders scattered around the world for one sizzling summer. If you think Manhattan had enough secrets and scandals to keep me busy, just wait until you see the souvenirs our sexy socialites have brought back home with them. Looks like gossip is global as "Gossip Girl" returns for its hotly anticipated fifth season!

Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) has spent a fabulous summer with her fiancé, Prince Louis (guest star Hugo Becker), in her future kingdom of Monaco. But when Blair returns home from the holiday, this Princess-to-be will quickly learn that planning a royal wedding can be a royal pain. And the fallout from Blair and Chuck's (Ed Westwick) heartbreaking decision to let each other go isn't making life easier.

Meanwhile, Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) scored the perfect summer job in sunny Los Angeles, working for an A-list director. Being in California has clearly allowed Serena to discover a new sense of purpose, but will the return of her cousin Charlie (Kaylee DeFer), in actuality a struggling actress Aunt Carol paid to impersonate her daughter, threaten to ruin everything? Only time will tell.
Chuck Bass and Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) enjoyed a hedonistic summer trip around the globe but, when they stop in Los Angeles to visit Serena, things quickly spin out of control. Nate falls into bed with a sexy and mysterious older woman, Diana Payne (guest star Elizabeth Hurley), who has more in store for him than he knows. And a seemingly carefree Chuck is chasing down exotic adrenaline rushes that might put his life in real danger.
After a relaxing summer in the Hamptons, Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley), has his whole world shattered when he discovers that Vanessa has gone behind his back and found an editor to anonymously publish his autobiographical novel, INSIDE. Dan's terrified of all his friends and family reading his critique of New York high society, but will he say no to the fame and fortune that comes with being a published author? It's anybody's guess.
So watch out Upper East Siders, this season nobody's safe, and everybody's going to be sorry….XOXO Gossip Girl.

The Organ Donor Card

from previous post:

Because of the Philippines' deep family ties, religious devotion and superstitious/traditional beliefs, the number of cadaver harvests is dismally low. To help relatives make the decision to donate, the Organ Donor Card  project was started. Although not the equivalent of a legal consent document at the present time, it can help the relatives realize that the donor has consented beforehand and that his wishes be respected.

Organ Donation FAQ

What should I do if I want to donate my organs and tissues?

Talk about it with your family.  The single most important way to "register" as a donor is to "register" your wishes with your family so they will know your decision.  Talk especially to the person who will have the final say when consenting to the doctors for the harvesting of your organs (In decreasing order of importance: legal wife, parent, legitimate adult offspring, sibling)

What are the top ten myths regarding organ donation?

  1. Myth: My body will be mutilated when my organs are harvested.
Fact: Donated organs are removed surgically, in a routine operation similar to gallbladder or appendix removal. Normal funeral arrangements are possible.
  2. Myth: My family would be expected to pay for donating my organs.
Fact: A donor's family is not charged for donation. If a family believes it has been billed incorrectly, the family immediately should contact its local organ procurement organization.
  3. Myth: I might want to donate one organ, but I do not want to donate everything.
Fact: You may specify what organs you want donated. Your wishes will be followed.
  4. Myth: If I am in an accident and the hospital knows that I want to be a donor, the doctors will not try to save my life.
Fact: The medical team treating you is separate from the transplant team. HOPE  is not notified until all lifesaving efforts have failed and death has been determined. HOPE does not notify the transplant team until your family has consented to donation.
  5. Myth: I am not the right age for donation.
Fact: Organs may be donated from someone as young as a newborn. Age limits for organ donation no longer exist; however, the general age limit for tissue donation is 70.
  6. Myth: If I donate, I would worry that the recipient and/or the recipient's family would discover my identity and cause more grief for my family.
Fact: Information about the donor is released by HOPE to the recipients only if the family that donated requests that it be provided.
  7. Myth: My religion does not support donation.
Fact: All organized religions support donation, typically considering it a generous act that is the individual's choice.
  8. Myth: Only heart, liver and kidneys can be transplanted.
Fact: The pancreas, lungs, small and large intestines, and the stomach also can be transplanted.
  9. Myth: Wealthy people are the only people who receive transplants.
Fact: Anyone requiring a transplant is eligible for one. Arrangements can be made with the transplant hospital for individuals requiring financial assistance.
  10. Myth: I have a history of medical illness. You would not want my organs or tissues.
Fact: At the time of death, HOPE will review medical and social histories to determine donor suitability on a case-by-case basis.

What kind of tissues can be transplanted?

Currently transplanted human tissues include bone, corneas, skin, heart valves, veins, cartilage and other connective tissues. These tissues can be used to treat patients suffering from congenital defects, blindness, visual impairment, trauma, burns, dental defects, arthritis, cancer, vascular and heart disease. Many heart valves are used to treat children with congenital defects of their own heart valves.

Tissue transplantation can be lifesaving as in the case of serious burn injury (skin grafts) or heart valve replacement. More often, however, tissue transplantation is life-enhancing. Giving the gift of sight to someone who would otherwise be blind or repairing a bone injured due to trauma or disease are life-enhancing benefits of tissue transplantation.

What if I want to donate NOW and not after my death?

  1. Blood - Blood donors are always needed. Did you know that you can safely donate blood every 8 weeks?  In the Philippines, contact the Philippine National Red Cross at 527-8392, 527-8393, 527-8384, 527-8394, 530-0049, 527-3595 for Metro Manila.  You can also donate at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute's Blood Bank at 924-3601 to 19.
  2. Bone - If you are going to have total hip replacement surgery, you can donate the bone that is going to have to be removed from your body.  To donate bone, you can call the Philippine General Hospital Bone Bank at 521-8450.
  3. Bone Marrow - Did you know that your healthy bone marrow could save a life?  To inquire about Bone Marrow donation, call the HOPE office at 924-0680.
  4. Kidney, Partial Liver, and Partial Lung Donation - Relatives, spouses, friends and others may be considered as potential living donors to people with whom they have a "significant emotional tie." If you are close to someone who needs a kidney, lung, or liver transplant and would like to be considered as a donor, contact that person's transplant center to see if it might be possible to donate. If you are considering living donation, please see TransWeb's FAQ on living kidney donation or some US statistics and information on living liver donation.

At this time, there is no mechanism for living kidney donors who simply want to donate a kidney, but don't have any specific recipient in mind. We encourage you to channel your generosity into the following actions that can save many lives:

     - make sure your family knows that you would like to donate your organs and tissues upon death
     - donate blood whenever possible
     - consider joining a bone marrow donor registry

No, you can't sell your kidney.
  5. Skin - If you are having excess skin removed (due to a drastic loss of weight), you may have considered donating the excess skin to a skin bank. Unfortunately, this is not possible.

Can I sell my kidney?

Paid donation is illegal in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and all of Europe. In India, paid organ donation has been tolerated in the past, but the government there has passed a resolution intended to eliminate the practice. To date, no reputable organization pays for human organs anywhere in the world. Although paid donation may occur in some parts of the world, the lack of accountability of the unscrupulous individuals that engage in this practice means that it is an unsafe to either donate a kidney through such an organization, or purchase a kidney in this way.

In the Philippines, there is currently no law that either allows or prohibits the practice of selling organs but most medical professionals especially the transplant surgeons and urologists find this practice unethical and distasteful.  Although it may happen in this country, it does so without the knowledge of the doctors since this is a private deal between the donor and the recipient who pass the donor out as a "distant cousin".

Tell me about Brain Death?

Brain Death is the complete cessation of brain functions including the brain stem.   The heart may be functioning as well as the lungs with support, however the brain has been irreversibly damaged.  This state is called Brain Death and is legally and medically equivalent to clinical death.  For more information you can find an excellent treatise at http://www.transweb.org/donation_folder/b_death.html.

Is there any truth to the so-called "Stolen-Kidney Myth" wherein a man is supposed to have been drugged by a beautiful woman and later wakes up in a motel room with one of his kidneys removed?

The original story comes from a "friend of a friend/cousin/neighbor" who is supposed to have walked into a bar and met an extremely beautiful girl who allows herself to be seduced by the friend.  After a few drinks they go to a nearby hotel/motel.   The next thing he remembers is waking up in a bathtub, filled with ice and a fresh incision scar on his back.  Consulting his doctor he finds out that one of his kidneys had been removed and is warned that there is a syndicate specializing in stealing kidneys from healthy looking people, drugging them and performing the surgery in a hotel/motel room.  The kidneys are then sold to wealthy people who need the organ
This story is actually a classic "urban legend", the sort of folklore that is passed by word of mouth, but all attempts to trace the source are confounded.  There are several reasons why this story is highly unlikely:
  1. A donor nephrectomy operation is a very delicate and demanding procedure since unlike a simple nephrectomy wherein you remove a sick kidney, in the former the kidney that you remove has to be able to function when transplanted, thus the procedure emphasizes delicate tissue handling as well as maintaining the blood supply and length for easy transplantation.  These issues are difficult enough in a modern operating theatre, much less a motel room where transporting surgical lights, breakable surgical table drapes, instruments, anesthesia machines, vital signs monitors as well as catheters, sutures, and other consumables without anyone seeing them is impossible.
  2. Virtually no one uses ice anymore to take care of fresh surgical wounds.
  3. Unless it is done to a LOT of victims, it is difficult to find a good match for the relatively small number of wealthy recipients.
I have actually read the story in a book named "The Big Book of Urban Legends" by Jan Harold Brunvand, et al (Paradox press 1995)

All About Organ Donation

Human Organ Preservation Effort (H.O.P.E.)

The Human Organ Preservation Effort is a non-profit organization in the Philippines under the umbrella of the National Kidney & Transplant Institute, dedicated to the legal procurement of donor organs for transplantation to patients afflicted with various types of end-stage organ disease. The effort concentrates mostly on donors who have been declared brain dead with otherwise normal organs.

There are two types of donors:
1. The living-related donor
Donate to: blood relativeOrgans that can be donated: one kidney, bone marrow and part of the liver (if the recipient is a child)How to donate: voluntarily
The living-related donor (LRD) is a blood relative of the patient who willingly donates one of his or her organs without any corresponding danger to the donor's life or any alteration in his usual physical activities. Organs that can be donated through the LRD route are one kidney, bone marrow and part of the liver if the recipient is a child.

2. The cadaver donor

Donate to: any patient
Organs that can be donated: both kidneys, bone marrow, long bones, corneas, the whole liver, pancreas, lungs and heart.
How to donate: voluntarily, must be brain dead, must have an organ donor card and signed consent.
The cadaver donor (CAD) is someone who is unrelated to the patient who suffered injury by trauma or disease to the brain, destroying the upper brain functions (which house a person's personality and stock of knowledge, and for all intents and purposes, his very being) leaving the brain stem or vegetative functions (which involuntarily control a person's breathing, heart, and other life-sustaining functions) intact.

Before a patient becomes a cadaver donor he or she has to be certified as brain dead. In the past, death was defined as stoppage of the heart. Presently, the old definition still holds true, however in some cases a person is considered dead even if he or she is still breathing with the heart beating. These brain dead cases are usually caused by trauma to the brain (via gunshot, blunt injury, vehicular injury, etc.). In the Philippines, certification of brain death requires the certification of a neurologist or neurosurgeon supported by imaging studies (Xrays, CT Scan or MRI) and electroencephalography (EEG). Since the donor is considered dead, organs that can be harvested include both kidneys, bone marrow, long bones, corneas, the whole liver, pancreas, lungs and heart.

However, before a cadaver donor's organs are harvested, there must be a signed consent of the nearest-of-kin or via a last will and testament. In the former, especially in cases of sudden trauma, it is the difficult job of HOPE's transplant coordinators to discuss the option of organ donation with the relatives in this time of grief. Only with a signed consent can a patient be harvested for organ donation.

In several countries abroad, especially in Singapore, Spain and now Denmark, the system is that unless the donor has previously signified his REFUSAL to donate, his organs can be harvested. In the Philippines, the reverse is true, only if the donor has agreed beforehand or if the relatives have agreed to consent can his organs be harvested.

Cadaver Organ Donation in the Philippines is still in its infancy even though it was started way back in 1983 because of budgetary constraints. However this does not daunt the people of HOPE to do the best they can.

Watch out for my post tomorrow: The Organ Donor Card

Facebook Timeline: The Story Of Your Life

Tell Your Story with Timeline

by Samuel W. Lessin on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 1:30am
Since the beginning of Facebook, your profile has been the place where you tell your story. People use it to share everything from the small stuff, like their thoughts on an article, to the most important events of their lives, like the photos of their wedding or the birth of their child.

The evolution of your profile

Back in the early days of Facebook, your profile was pretty basic – just your name, a photo, where you went to school…stuff you'd cover in the first five minutes you met someone.

Over time, your profile evolved to better reflect how you actually communicate with your friends. Now you can can share photos of what you did last weekend, and updates about how you feel today.

But since the focus is on the most recent things you posted, more important stuff slips off the page. The photos of your graduation get replaced by updates about what you had for breakfast.

Say you're catching up with an old friend – would you rather find out that they had eggs this morning, or hear about their new dream job?

The way your profile works today, 99% of the stories you share vanish. The only way to find the posts that matter is to click "Older Posts" at the bottom of the page. Again. And again.

Imagine if there was an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect all your best moments in a single place.

Introducing timeline – a new kind of profile

With timeline, now you have a home for all the great stories you've already shared. They don't just vanish as you add new stuff.

Timeline is wider than your old profile, and it's a lot more visual.  The first thing you'll notice is the giant photo right at the top. This is your cover, and it's completely up to you which of your photos you put here.

As you scroll down past your cover, you'll see your posts, photos and life events as they happened in time. You choose what's featured on your timeline. You can star your favorites to double their size or hide things altogether.

Filling in the blanks

If important parts of your story aren't included on your timeline, you can go back to when they happened and add them.

Or go to your private activity log. This is where you'll find everything you shared since you joined Facebook. Click on any post to feature it on your timeline so your friends can see it, too.

Add apps to your timeline

Introducing a new kind of social app that lets you show the things you like to do on your timeline – the music you listen to, the recipes you try, the runs you take and more.

These apps also help you discover what your friends are up to. You can even join in if you want: play the song they're listening to, or watch the same TV show.

You can start adding some of these new apps today, but timeline won't be available for a few weeks.

When you get your timeline, you can choose to publish it immediately or take a few days to review what's there and add anything that's missing.

Now, you and your friends will finally be able to tell all the different parts of your story – from the small things you do each day to your biggest moments. What will you create? We can't wait to find out.

Sam Lessin, a product manager at Facebook, is looking forward to adding the photo of his elephant-powered wedding to his timeline.

Love, now and always,
