In a fury of blogging and programming, what begins in his dorm room soon becomes a global social network and a revolution in communication. A mere six years and 500 million friends later, Mark Zuckerberg is the youngest billionaire in history... but for this entrepreneur, success leads to both personal and legal complications.
The Social Network is about the founding of the Internet social networking website, Facebook. The film was directed by David Fincher and features an ensemble cast—Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Brenda Song, Max Minghella, Rooney Mara, and Armie Hammer. It is told Rashomon style, from three points of view.
The Movie opens with Mark Zuckerberg being dumped by the girl he's dating. Angry, drunk "and blogging", he hacks up a hot-or-not-style comparison site featuring pictures of almost every female student at Harvard. The site is quite literally an overnight sensation; and while almost every woman on campus now hates his guts, this whiff of success prompts him to try engineering his way into Harvard's sexed-up social elite. De- and reconstructing interpersonal relationships through technology becomes his new obsession. And from there, Facebook is born.
The Social Network is not a simple story. It's a movie about every other thing--from fiction to fact to technology to marketing Facebook to a story about youth, friend and betrayal. But definitely, it is about the Internet.
